Vessel with cardial decoration
provenance: Santarém
chronology: Early Neolithic
typology: Ceramic vessel with cardial decoration
dimension: height 27.6 cm (10 ⅞ in.) diameter 18.6 cm (7 ¼ in.)
category: Neolithic
inventory number: 5101

Vessel with globular/ovoid body, or in the shape of a "bag bottom". At the middle of the belly it has vertical loop handles, of which only one is remaining. Its neck is tall and cylindrical. It was incomplete, having been restored. It shows the typical "cardial" decoration obtained by the impression of cockle shells (cerastoderma edule) on still soft paste. This decoration is arranged in bands of parallel stripes that partly cover the surface of the belly, neck and handle. The Santarém vessel broadly published and internationally known, on account of its morphology and decoration integrates the assemblage of the oldest ceramic vessels of the Portuguese territory, dated from the Early Neolithic, thus probably going back to the 5 th millennium B.C.
